National Year of Reading 2026
Markfield Community Library is delighted (and excited!) to have received a letter from Her Majesty, Queen Camilla. Her Majesty launched the National Year of Reading back in January 2026. We look forward to launching this year’s Summer Reading challenge to mark this special year for literacy.

The National Year of Reading 2026 is a UK-wide initiative led by the Department for Education and the National Literacy Trust, designed to address the decline in reading for pleasure among children and adults. From first stories with babies to the changing interests of older children and teens, reading looks different at every stage of family life.

Running through 2026, the campaign encourages everyone to “Go All In” connecting reading to existing interests to build literacy, wellbeing, and confidence. Markfield Community Library is encouraging you all to reconnect with reading with the things that inspire you. Visit your local Community and Town Libraries, wherever they are, and explore what they have to offer including digital and audiobooks.
April 2026 also saw many Community Libraries celebrating 10 years of community operation and Leicestershire County Council hosted a volunteer event which included a talk by Stephen Booth, crime novelist of 25 years, whose Cooper and Fry detective novels have recently been made into a television series. A fascinating insight into the world of writing and yes – you will find his novels in the library or able to have them loaned for you from other libraries to pick up and return at Markfield.
Trustees Margaret and John Bowler, with Stephen Booth.

Save the date:

Markfield Community Library will be hosting one of our twice yearly get togethers for volunteers, to thank them for their commitment to sustaining a Community Library in Markfield. Graham Palmer, 1943 – 2021
We are very grateful to Richard and Ed from Johnson Tree Care (right) who have guided us in purchasing and planting a tree in memory of Graham Palmer.
We were very sad when Graham passed away last year as he was a daily visitor to read the papers at the library and kept an eye on the building for us out of hours as a near neighbour.
His wife, Gabriella (left), has been one of our library volunteers from the start.
The tree is just inside the pedestrian gate where we hope, apart from reminding us of the loss of Graham, it will provide some comfort to Gabriella and joy to us all as it flowers each Spring.
